The right supplier makes all the difference to a mobile tech: you need high quality supplies, top-notch support, and great value from your supplier. A bad supplier can kill an account! That’s right…if you get shipped the wrong items, sent late, you won’t repair your dealer’s cars on time. They soon drop you and your competitor’s van is on their lot every Tuesday.
These two big Michigan suppliers are among the volume leaders in the industry. How do they compare? Read on.
The Paint Warehouse: The Only Choice for Standox
If you’re faithful to Standox (their reputation for color formula accuracy is unmatched), TPW is your only choice these days, as Paint Bull has stopped supplying Standox toners. TPW supplies yearly formula updates and phone support when you can’t that “just right” match.
The Clear Price Leader: The Paint Warehouse
TPW sells its Standox toners for considerably less, per ounce, than Paintbull sells its comparable Diamont toners for. Have a look at TPW’s price list for their toners, and compare them Paint Bull’s prices. TPW averages around $30 per 8 oz. of paint, while Paint Bull’s prices are about $22 per 2 oz. of paint. Adjusted per ounce, that’s nearly triple the cost per ounce.
Customer Service at Paint Bull: Excellent. TPW: Unknown.
Several of our customers are Paint Bull customers as well. They all report great service from PB: they ship quickly, orders are accurate, and their techs are really helpful in a pinch. We haven’t heard any feedback about TPW, a relatively new company. Are you a TPW customer? Let us know what you think of them in an email.
Training at Paint Bull: Good. TPW: Unknown. There are other options.
Students of Paint Bull report good results, but report that conditions didn’t truly simulate the “real world” of being a mobile tech. That is, real mobile techs paint in the wind, in rain, in extreme heat, get paint runs, have equipment failures, etc. Real techs also have to pitch new business and handle unhappy customers. This is why, if you can arrange it, learning from a real mobile tech is a superior path into the business. Find a tech out of the area you plan to service, sign a no-compete, and follow him around for two weeks. Pay him well. You will learn every angle of the business.
