“Do you take credit cards?”
Most mobile techs don’t, and there are good reasons for this. First, merchant accounts charge big set up fees ($500+) as well as monthly maintenance fees. It simply doesn’t make sense financially for a mobile tech who may only charge 15 – 20 transactions monthly.
The consequences of not accepting plastic.
First, there’s the occasional customer who just doesn’t carry cash or checks. You flat out lose this business. But second, accept enough checks and you’re bound to run into one that…bounces. It’s not pretty. You have to hunt down the customer to get cash. He may not have the cash…you may never find him.
Got a smart phone? Accept credit cards: no set up fees, no monthly fees.
Getting started accepting credit cards has become simpler than ever for business owners with smart phones. The major delay, in the past, was shipping and setting up the credit card processing device. A group of companies have set up credit card processing services that use your smartphone as the credit card acceptance device.
Here’s how it works:
- Open an app on your Android, iPhone, or BlackBerry phone.
- Prepare a brief invoice (ie, “Full Detail: $195).
- Customer enters his email, then his credit card # and expiration date.
- Card is processed. Customer receives a receipt via email. You receive your money within 24 hours.
What’s it cost?
About 3% per transaction. No fees initially. No monthly fees. Yes, it’s a bit more expensive than taking checks, and if you have a trusted account, certainly continue taking checks. But for customers who insist on plastic, and for new customers, processing cards with your phone is a revenue generator and time saver.
