Auto Detailing Training: Exploring the 3 available training resources.
Auto detailing can be a very fun profession: you’ll get to work with a lot of interesting cars (Porsches, Ferraris, etc.) and meet many car crazy people with some great stories. If you own your own detail shop and have a good steady flow of customers, the money can be wonderful as well. But it’s not as simple as it seems. There are customer requests like carpet stains, mold, food odors, cigarette odors, oxidized aluminum trim, and others that you have to fix permanently to truly call yourself a “Pro.” How to get started? Here’s 3 options:
Option 1: Work in a detail shop.
There’s simply no substitute for being in a retail detailing environment. You’ll work on the whole range of problems and cars: Minivans with 6 pounds of food buried in the carpets to concours-quality Ferraris needing complete paint correction.
Pros: Exposure to a variety of real-world detailing problems. Learn to work FAST and under pressure.
Cons: You may have to sign a no-compete contract. And even if you don’t you’re deceiving your manager who you will soon be entering into competition with when you leave his shop.
Option 2: Attend a Detailing School.
There’s at least 4 detailing schools nationwide that train car lovers to become independent detail business owners. They’re located in California and Pennsylvania and include RightLook, Detailing for Success (recommended) and Detail King. To get a full foundation in detailing training and marketing training, expect to invest about a week of your time and $2500 in travel and tuition costs.
Pros: Learn from experienced and successful detailers in a structured for-learning environment.
Cons: Cost. May not encounter real-world issues as discussed above.
Option 3: Train online or read books.
- Amazon.com has a variety of books on the topic of launching a car detailing business.
- The Auto Detailing Blueprint is an online course I created that teaches you everything you need to know to start your own detail business in two weeks.
- Rightlook.com also has an online “Master Detailing” course for $495.
Pros: Cost effective: $15 – $495 depending on the book or course you choose. Time effective: study and practice on your own time.
Cons: No hands-on learning. You must be self-motivated enough to practice the concepts that you learn in your books and online videos.
A final note on car detailing training.
No matter which path you choose, 95% of what you learn will be learned on the job. No school, book, or even brief stint at a detail shop will prepare you for the 1000s of unique problems that your customers will bring you. Yes, you need a basic foundation before you jump into running a detailing business. But don’t expect to master it all in one month! Be patient, be dilligent, and after your 35th car, you’ll really start to gain confidence that will propel you to success.
